THERMO INSTRUMENT SYSTEMS ACQUIRES SPECTRA-PHYSICS ANALYTICAL, FORMING NEW UNIT

 WALTHAM, Mass., Feb. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Thermo Instrument Systems Inc. (AMEX: THI) has completed its previously announced acquisition of Spectra-Physics Analytical, Inc., a Fremont, Calif.-based manufacturer of liquid chromatography and capillary electrophoresis instruments and a unit of Spectra-Physics AB of Stockholm, for approximately $69 million cash. Spectra-Physics Analytical's 1992 revenues were approximately $68 million.
 Under the name Thermo Separation Products, Thermo Instrument will combine the operations of Spectra-Physics Analytical with its LDC Analytical Inc. subsidiary, which makes products for liquid chromatography and mercury analysis.
 Arvin H. Smith, president and chief executive officer of Thermo Instrument Systems, said, "The potential represented by this combination of businesses is exciting. Through Thermo Separation Products, we now have a more complete line of instruments, systems, data-handling options, and accessories for liquid chromatography, as well as another important technology Q capillary electrophoresis Q for biochemical and pharmaceutical analyses, environmental monitoring, and product development and quality-assurance research. The company's unified sales and service organization also provides us with a greater presence in Europe, where the liquid chromatography market is as large as North America's."
 Thermo Instrument funded the acquisition with borrowings from its parent company, Thermo Electron Corporation (NYSE: TMO).
 Thermo Instrument Systems develops, manufactures, and markets analytical instruments used to detect and monitor air pollution, radioactivity, complex chemical compounds, and toxic metals and other elements in a broad range of liquids and solids. The company also provides environmental science and engineering services, laboratory- based testing, and nuclear health physics services. Thermo Instrument Systems is a public subsidiary of Thermo Electron Corporation.
