THERMO INSTRUMENT SYSTEMS ACQUIRES RADIATION MEASUREMENT DIVISIONS OF GERMAN MANUFACTURER

WALTHAM, Mass., Nov. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Thermo Instrument Systems Inc. (AMEX: THI) today announced that it has acquired the German-based radiation safety measurement products division and radiometry process control division of FAG Kugelfischer Georg Schafer AG, and also has agreed to acquire FAGUs radiometry operations in England and France, subject to certain conditions. The total purchase price is approximately $12 million.
Together, the businesses had sales of approximately $45 million in 1992. The radiation safety measurement products division, which had approximately $20 million in sales last year, is a major supplier of instruments and systems that are manufactured to European standards for radiation protection and environmental monitoring. Through the radiometry division, which had sales of approximately $25 million in 1992, FAG is a leading European manufacturer of industrial gauging and process control systems that use radiometric technology. These products are used in the production of flat sheet materials. Both German divisions are located in Erlangen in new buildings, one of which was included in the purchase and another that will be leased for two years.
John T. Keiser, Thermo Instrument Systems vice president and head of its nuclear monitoring instruments group, said, "These acquisitions provide us with a much stronger presence in the European market, and the German-based businesses will benefit from our position as America's leading manufacturer of instruments that detect and measure nuclear radioactivity for personnel protection."
Thermo Instrument Systems develops, manufactures, and markets analytical instruments used to detect and monitor air pollution, radioactivity, complex chemical compounds, and toxic metals and other elements in a broad range of liquids and solids. The company also provides environmental science and engineering services, laboratory-based testing, and nuclear health physics services. Thermo Instrument Systems is a public subsidiary of Thermo Electron Corporation (NYSE: TYO).
