THERMO INSTRUMENT STARTS JOHNSTON ISLAND PLUTONIUM-CONTAMINATED SOIL
 CLEANUP PLANT
WALTHAM, Mass., Jan. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Thermo Instrument Systems Inc. (AMEX: THI) announced today the startup of the plutonium recovery plant on Johnston Island by its Thermo Analytical (TMA) subsidiary.
The company was awarded a three-year, $4.4 million contract during the third quarter of 1990 to make improvements to and operate an existing facility. This plant is instrumental to a Defense Nuclear Agency project that will clean up 100,000 cubic yards of soil that was radiologically contaminated with plutonium as a result of nuclear weapons effects testing conducted in 1962. A ribbon-cutting plant startup ceremony was attended by the Commander of Defense Nuclear Agency Field Command, Rear Admiral Mack C. Gaston, USN.
The plutonium recovery system was designed in conjunction with Defense Nuclear Agency scientists to separate radioactive contaminants from otherwise clean soil. This separation accomplishes two goals: first, it reduces the volume of soil that requires disposal as radioactive waste, thereby reducing cleanup costs; and second, it produces clean soil that can be used as construction fill material and for other beneficial uses. This contaminant recovery system is a cost-effective alternative to environmental cleanup projects.
Thermo Instrument Systems develops, manufactures, and markets analytical instruments used to detect and monitor air pollution, radioactivity, complex chemical compounds, and toxic metals and other elements in a broad range of liquids and solids. The company also provides environmental science and engineering services, laboratory-based testing, and nuclear health physics services. Thermo Instrument Systems is a public subsidiary of Thermo Electron Corporation (NYSE: TMO).
