THERMO INSTRUMENT SHIPPING $1 MILLION ORDER FROM
DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE FOR PESTICIDE ANALYSIS SYSTEMS
WALTHAM, Mass., Jan. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Thermo Instrument Systems Inc. (AMEX: THI) announced today that its Finnigan MAT subsidiary has been awarded contracts totaling $1 million by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to provide 10 Tracker(tm) Ion Trap Mass Spectrometers for use in pesticide analysis of produce and related methods development.
Under the agreement, the company is providing the instruments for use in the USDA's Pesticide Data Program (PDP) in its task of determining the extent of pesticide exposure to the public through commercially available produce. Shipment of the equipment has begun and is expected to be completed this month, followed by ongoing training and technical support.
The Tracker system is designed to detect extremely low levels of agricultural chemical contamination such as pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides that may be present in residual amounts on fruits and vegetables. The system comprises a gas chromatograph coupled with a mass spectrometer (GC-MS) and an integrated data system that uses proprietary software for data reporting.
"As the USDA defines analytical methods for routine screening and quantification procedures, we are pleased that the ion trap technology developed by Finnigan MAT will provide its researchers around the country with the required sensitivity for pesticide detection and identification," said Dr. Richard W. Chapmam, president of Finnegan MAT's San Jose, Calif.-based operation, which is manufacturing the instruments.
Thermo Instrument Systems develops, manufactures, and markets analytical instruments used to detect and monitor air pollution, radioactivity, complex chemical compounds, and toxic metals and other elements in a broad range of liquids and solids. The company also provides environmental science and engineering services, laboratory-based testing, and nuclear health physics services. Thermo Instrument Systems is a public subsidiary of Thermo Electron Corporation (NYSE:TMO).
