THERMO INSTRUMENT RECEIVES RECORD $3.5 MILLION ORDER
 FOR AIR POLLUTION MONITORING EQUIPMENT
WALTHAM, Mass., Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Thermo Instrument Systems Inc. (AMEX: THI) today announced receipt of a $3.5 million contract for advanced air pollution source-monitoring instruments.
Under the order, the company will supply more than 500 instruments that will be used by utilities throughout the United States to meet requirements of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, which are being phased in under rules formulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The instruments measure smokestack emissions of nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and carbon dioxide. Shipment of the order has begun and is scheduled for completion by December 1993.
"RAs the nation's new standards for air quality are implemented and enforced, we believe that the greatest and longest-lasting effect will be on demand for instruments that monitor emissions sources at facilities such as power plants and other large users of fossil fuels," said Denis A. Helm, Thermo Instrument Systems vice president and head of its air monitoring instrument headquarters in Franklin, Mass. "We are especially pleased that our products have again been selected to measure progress toward the goal of clean air."
Thermo Instrument Systems develops, manufactures, and markets analytical instruments used to detect and monitor air pollution, radioactivity, complex chemical compounds, and toxic metals and other elements in a broad range of liquids and solids. The company also provides environmental science and engineering services, laboratory-based testing, and nuclear health physics services. Thermo Instrument Systems is a public subsidiary of Thermo Electron Corporation (NYSE: TMO).
