        $80 MILLION BIOMASS-FUELED POWER PLANT IN CALIFORNIA
    WALTHAM, Mass., Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Thermo Electron Corporation (NYSE: TMO) today announced that its Energy Systems division will begin construction of its fourth biomass-fueled power plant in California at an estimated total project cost, including financing, of $80 million. The plant will be located in Kern County, near Delano and north of Bakersfield.
    The facility, which will supply 21 megawatts (Mw) under a long-term contract with Southern California Edison Company, will be fueled by local agricultural and wood waste.  Permitting has been completed and construction is scheduled to begin in spring 1992.
    The new plant, expected to be operational by the end of 1993, is the fourth project of this type that Thermo Electron will construct in California.  Thermo Energy Systems operates similar biomass-fueled power plants in Woodland and Mendota, as well as another facility in Delano, generating a total of more than 77 Mw of electricity.  The company also operates three wood-waste fueled power plants in New England generating a total of more than 40 Mw of electricity.
    "Our involvement in this project makes Thermo the largest developer/ operator of agricultural and wood-waste biomass power plants in the U.S.," said Jerry Davis, president of Energy Systems.
    Thermo Electron develops, manufactures, and markets environmental and analytical instruments, custom-engineered and pre-packaged cogeneration systems, industrial process equipment, biomedical materials and products, and fabricated biomedical and aerospace components. The company also provides metallurgical heat treating, water quality engineering, and analytical laboratory services.
