THERMO ANALYTICAL, AS PART OF BECHTEL TEAM, TO PROVIDE SERVICES UNDER LONG-TERM CONTRACT AT DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY HANFORD SITE

WALTHAM, Mass., Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Thermo Instrument Systems Inc. (AMEX: THI) today announced that its Thermo Analytical Inc. environmental services subsidiary, as part of a team led by Bechtel Hanford Inc., will provide technical support and laboratory analysis under the Environmental Restoration Management Contract (ERMC) for the U.S. Department of EnergyUs (DOE) Hanford site.
The Bechtel team, which also includes International Technology Corporation and CH2M Hill, was awarded a five-year contract, with a three-year renewal option, with operations to begin by July 1. The contract has an estimated minimum value of $800 million over the first five years.
"We are pleased to be part of this successful team and to be taking part in another of the Energy Department's key environmental, health, and safety improvement programs at current and formerly used facilities throughout the country," said Dr. John P. Appleton, president of Thermo Analytical. "We are familiar with the site and its needs, as we have been conducting analysis of environmental samples from Hanford over the past two years. We're also pleased that this award represents an expansion of our productive relationship with Bechtel, which began more than a decade ago."
Thermo Analytical expects to form a wholly owned subsidiary, TMA/Hanford, to perform the work. TMA/Hanford will be providing nuclear health physics and industrial hygiene (HP/IH) services, project staff support, and overflow laboratory analysis of "mixed-waste" samples that contain both hazardous chemical and radioactive contamination.
Thermo Analytical also provides radiation measurement and analytical support services as a subcontractor to Bechtel National for the DOE's Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP) at locations throughout the United States. Thermo Analytical has participated with Bechtel in the FUSRAP program since 1981. Over the past five years, Thermo Analytical's revenues from that program have been approximately $20 million, and revenues related to the Hanford ERMC award should be comparable, according to Dr. Appleton.
The Hanford site, an area of 560 square miles, produced materials for nuclear defense and research from 1944 until 1987. It is among more than one dozen Energy Department facilities subject to environmental restoration activities that have an estimated cost of more than $150 billion over the next 20 years or longer.
Thermo Instrument Systems develops, manufactures, and markets analytical instruments used to detect and monitor air pollution, radioactivity, complex chemical compounds, and toxic metals and other elements in a broad range of liquids and solids. The company also provides environmental science and engineering services, laboratory- based testing, and nuclear health physics services. Thermo Instrument Systems is a public subsidiary of Thermo Electron Corporation.
