THE unfortunately named Julian Thick[...].

THE unfortunately named Julian Thick, MD of Aintree Racecourse, has no bearing on what I still believe to be a mug's game, even for those who study racing form. Once again the Grand National - the so-called People's Race - will see millions out of pocket to the bookies (have you ever met a poor bookmaker, any more than a poor dentist?). I gave up steeplechase gambling while the going was good, and two-times Maryland Cup winner Ben Nevis won the National in 1980 - my bet placed purely because the day before I had climbed Britain's highest mountain.
