THE serious novelist Sebastian Faulks.

Byline: VALERIE H ILL

THE serious novelist Sebastian Faulks, at the behest of Ian Fleming's estate, penned a new James Bond novel, Devil May Care, which sold 44,000 copies the moment it was published and will doubtless top the bestselller lists.

About his task, he said: "It was like asking someone who writes complex symphonic music if they would like to write a threeminute pop song. I do inner lives, not underwater explosions." So no personal angst, then, that he was dumbing down.
