THE serious, well-behaved; on TV.
Byline: Sara Wallis
THE serious, well-behaved cousin in the family, Bake Off: The Professionals, returned on Tuesday.
No room for larking about here and certainly no patience for collapsed souffles or soggy bottoms. Everything comes with a foam, a glaze or unpronounceable French decoration. Formerly a little too earnest, this revamped C4 version is much better than the previous one on BBC. Comedian Tom Allen, left, and Bake Off success success story Liam Charles are the Mel and Sue of the contest, bringing fun and banter to a show that was a little stiff.
Tom told the pros their miniature cakes should be "as identical as if they've been made by a robot pastry slave in a factory". Meanwhile Liam wondered if everyone was "psyched".
In the end there were Bakewell tarts as you've never seen them before, not to mention some extraordinary red velvet cake showpieces.
An exceedingly good start.
