THE annual Cardiff County and Vale of Glamorgan Music Service recitals for the Richard Fice Memorial Award saw Rhodri Skyrme, 14, win this year's award.The award is in memory of Richard Fice who played in the Music Service Ensembles as a child, became a Royal Marine Bandsman and was killed in the Deal IRA bomb tragedy in September 1989. It was set up to help young brass instrumentalists fulfil their potential and is open to members of Cardiff County and Vale of Glamorgan music ensembles aged up to 19.
Rhodri Skyrme, a pupil at Ysgol Gyfun Glantaf, plans to use the PS2,000 award to purchase a piccolo trumpet and an Eb trumpet.
He has been playing the trumpet for six years and has a place with the National Youth Brass Band of Wales.
