THE WORKS OF ISRAEL'S MOST IMPORTANT FIGURATIVE PAINTER, ITZCHAK TARKAY,
TO BE FEATURED AT PARK WEST GALLERY AUCTION IN FLORIDA, JAN. 23-24
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The extraordinary works of Israel's most important figurative painter and currently one of the world's most sought-after and collected artists, Itzchak Tarkay, will be featured at an important auction at the Marriott at Sawgrass Resort, 1000 TPC Blvd., Ponte Vedra, FL 32082.
Tarkay has works which utilize classical principles of painting, drawing and color in an unmistakably new approach that has never been seen before. His compositions and ideas may be linked to impressionism, Toulouse-Lautrec and the Fauvists and his landscapes and figures to the works of Milton Avery. When asked, Tarkay says that Matisse was his major inspiration. His authorship and sensitive compositions, however, are unmistakably new and unmistakably Tarkay.
Although Tarkay has been an artist for more than 30 years, in the short span of the past five years, an entire movement has developed from his work. His works may depict the teeming street life of Tel Aviv with its sidewalk cafes or old Jaffa's narrow alleyways, marketplaces and boulevards, but underlying this we see the whole of modernism in art.
Tarkay was born in 1935 in Subotica on the Yugoslav-Hungarian border. He spent his childhood at the Mathausen concentration camp. In 1949, his family migrated to Israel. His extraordinary art depicts his dedication, sensitivity and outstanding talent.
"He is one of a very important group of artists with European roots working in Israel at this time and certainly the major Israeli figure painter of our time ... we are fortunate to have this outstanding collection of his work to be offered here at auction in Ponte Vedra," said Albert Scaglione, president of Park West Gallery.
Tarkay's one-person exhibitions from 1988 through 1990 include the cities of Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Dusseldorf, New York, Boston, Los Angeles, London and Tokyo. His works are featured in many Israeli embassies as well as numerous public collections throughout the world.
The Ponte Vedra auction collection of more than 250 original works will also include paintings, watercolors and hand-signed limited edition graphics by Agam, Altman, Dus, Erte, Fanch, Lebadang, Maimon, Mouly, Picot, Tarkay, and Vasarely, as well as master-prints by Chagall, Dali, Miro, Picasso, Rembrandt, Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec.
The auction prices range from $200 to $5,000, however, a number of works are expected to bring more than $5,000 and the bidding on several is expected to exceed $10,000.
The collection may be viewed one hour and 30 minutes prior to each session of the auction. The entire collection has been cataloged according to contemporary international auction standards. The catalogs will be provided complimentary to registered bidders. Refreshments will be served during the preview. The public is invited. All major credit cards as well as checks from Ponte Vedra banks will be accepted. In addition, credit lines will be available for up to $50,000 for qualified bidders.
The auction will be conducted by Park West Gallery, one of America's leading gallery and auction houses. Park West Gallery has conducted auctions of fine art throughout the United States since 1969. The firm's corporate offices and permanent galleries are at 29469 Northwestern Highway, Southfield, MI 48034. For further information about the auction, please call 800-521-9654.
