THE WILLIAMS COMPANIES NAMES NEW PRESIDENT, VICE CHAIRMAN
TULSA, Okla., Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Joseph H. Williams announced

today that Vernon T. Jones has been elected vice chairman of the board of directors and that Keith E. Bailey has been selected to succeed Jones as president of the Williams Companies, Inc. (NYSE, PSE: WMB)
Williams, chairman and chief executive officer of the company, said the board made the elections during its regular meeting here today. The changes are to be effective Jan. 1.
"This action is part of the normal transition initiated by Vernon's announcement a few months ago that he would retire next July," Williams said. "We have benefitted greatly from his leadership and are extremely pleased that his successor will be named from within our own senior management ranks.
"Our company has a deep reservoir of talent, and I am confident that there will be a smooth transition as Keith assumes the responsibility of the day-to-day performance of the company," Williams said. "Continuity of management is critical because we are presently involved in the largest capital expansion program in our company's history."
Bailey, 49, joined Williams Pipe Line Company in 1973 and served in a variety of operating and management positions before being promoted to president of that subsidiary in 1979.
He later was named president of Williams Natural Gas Company, a position he held for two and one-half years before being promoted in 1986 to his current position of executive vice president and chief financial officer of the Williams Companies.
He was elected to the corporation's board in 1988.
A former chairman of the Tulsa-Area United Way and a member of the board of trustees of the University of Tulsa, Bailey has held many leadership positions in industry associations and civic organizations.
Bailey is a 1964 graduate of the University of Missouri-Rolla and has completed Harvard University's Program for Management Development. He is married and has four children.
Jones, 62, joined the company as president of Williams Pipe Line in 1975, a position he held until 1979, when he was promoted to executive vice president of the corporation and elected as a member of the board.
Following Williams' acquisition of Northwest Energy Company in 1983, he was named president and chief executive officer of that company. In 1985, he was promoted to president of the Williams Companies.
Jones will continue as chairman and chief executive officer of Apco Argentina, Inc., an oil and gas exploration company in which Williams holds a 63-percent interest.
He has been active in industry and community affairs, and has the unusual distinction of having been chairman of both the Interstate Natural Gas Association and the Association of Oil Pipelines.
A 1952 graduate of the University of Missouri-Rolla, Jones is the former chairman of Goodwill Industries and is a member of the board of St. John Medical Center, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Boy Scouts of America.
The Williams Companies provides pipeline transportation of natural gas and petroleum products and nationwide digital telecommunications.
