THE WILD WEST RIDES AGAIN

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- From Jan. 26-28 more than 30 riders, known as the "Hashknife Gang," will brave hostile elements to carry and relay the U.S. Mail from the high country of the Mogollon Rim to the Desert town of Scottsdale.
The "Pony Express" riders will depart with the mail at 8 a.m. from the Holbrook Post office on Jan. 26. At high noon on Jan. 28 the riders will arrive at the Scottsdale Main Post Office signaling the beginning of the Parada Del Sol (Walk in the Sun) Rodeo Days.
The old canvas and leather mail pouches are handed from one rider to another just as the original "Pony Express" riders did. The exchange is done at roughly one mile intervals on this treacherous 200 mile "Pony Express" run from the Holbrook Post Office to the Scottsdale Main Post Office.
"The initial cost of sending a letter 'Pony Express' was $5 for each half ounce," said Holbrook Postmaster Juan Florez. "Present day 'Pony Express' riders will carry the mail for only 29 cents. All expenses are paid by each rider, with some costs offset by sponsorshp and contributions," he said.
This year will mark the 36th annual ride. Customers may have their letter(s) carried by the "Hashknife Gang" by simply addressing the letter(s) as usual, affixing a 29-cent postage stamp, and writing via "Pony Express" in the lower left hand corner. "This allows us to identify and hold the mail for the ride," said Florez. Then place the letter(s) inside a larger envelope with proper postage and address to: "Pony Express," Postmaster, 216 E. Hopl Dr., Holbrook, AZ 86025-9998 or Postmaster, 7242 E. Osborn Rd., Scottsdale, AZ 85251-9998. Letters must be received by Friday, Jan. 21, 1994.
You can also bring your letters to either post office location (Holbrook, Scottsdale Main Office), or Norwest Bank, Stadium Branch, 7331 E. Osborn Rd., Scottsdale, AZ.
