THE WALT DISNEY CO. GOES GOOFY

THE WALT DISNEY CO. GOES GOOFY
BURBANK, Calif., Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Confirming all rumors,

the entire Walt Disney Co. is going Goofy in 1992, as it prepares to turn the spotlight on the 60th anniversary of one of its most famous and best-loved characters, Goofy, it was announced today by Richard H. Frank, president, The Walt Disney Studios.
"Mickey and Donald have both been celebrated in a no-holds-barred manner before," said Frank, "but I guarantee no one has ever seen anything quite like the salute we've planned for Goofy. To begin with, it's the first time we've ever produced an original, half-hour cartoon series around one of the studio's classic characters. We think it's a great way to follow up on five years of having the No. 1 children's show in syndication. "Goof Troop" premieres in syndication this coming September on "The Disney Afternoon."
"In addition," Frank continued, "every Disney business will focus on Goofy. From consumer products to home video to Disney theme parks, everyone is losing their minds, because the goofier and more surprising the festivities, entertainment and plans are, the better!"
As one of Disney's most successful and fun-loving personalities, Goofy's upcoming syndicated television series has inspired company- wide excitement throughout the Burbank-based entertainment organization. Bringing Goofy forward into the '90s, "Goof Troop" finds him living in suburbia and coping with the challenges of raising his 11-year-old son, Goofy, Jr., who prefers to be known as Max. Desperate to swim out of the deep end of his father's gene pool, Max is forever getting himself and his dad embroiled in a series of neighborhood (mis)adventures, resulting in slapstick comedy and side-splitting hilarity.
Putting the focus on fun, the celebration begins at the Disney theme parks this coming summer, just prior to the fall 1992 syndicated television premiere of "Goof Troop." Daily parades, special events, "Goofy Days" and shows will bring the party to every guest who walks through the gates at Disneyland or Walt Disney World. Summer and fall target market tours starring Goofy will take to the road, traveling to over 20 major markets coast-to-coast. Plans are also afoot to develop a 20-story Goofy hot-air balloon that will take the celebration into the friendly skies -- above the continental United States and around the world.
Consumer Products Licensing will launch a full line of Goofy merchandise for children and adults -- apparel, toys, jewelry, gifts and accessories will be showcased in an overall marketing campaign that will include national retail tie-in promotions.
Buena Vista Home Video will spotlight a Goofy-themed summertime promotion, with a variety of Goofy releases available to consumers who can't get enough of this loveable galoot.
Buena Vista Television will launch the series with a syndicated two-hour special, and a gala network television special is also planned to salute the Goof, featuring a celebrity line-up and highlighting his multi-faceted career, from motion pictures to public service, in sports, comics and even serving as an ambassador of goodwill (or good humor) at Disney theme parks. Special programming and "The Roots of Goofy," an original retrospective, will also be scheduled on the Disney Channel during the cable service's free spring preview, available to upwards of 70 million television homes. And, KCAL-TV, Disney's owned and operated Los Angeles television station, together with "Disney Afternoon" affiliate stations nationwide, will highlight the Goofy celebration with Kids Club promotions.
Walt Disney Publishing will produce a four-issue limited series of Goofy comic books, Goofy books for children and a special collector's edition of Disney Adventures magazine will dedicate itself to the series and the "goof behind the Goof."
On the domestic scene The Disney Store, with 119 locations nationwide, will go Goofy with new merchandise and eye-catching displays. Walt Disney Records will release "The Goofy Country Album," featuring the multi-talented star vocalizing to a down-home country beat along with Mickey and Minnie. Computerized Goofy games will also hit the marketplace when Disney Computer Software releases a new video game based on the new "Goof Troop" series.
Besides these many domestic activities, the Year of Goofy will go international via worldwide "Disney Club" television shows broadcast in such countries as the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Holland, Portugal, Denmark, Venezuela, Australia, Chile, Argentina, Singapore and Hong Kong. And, unique Goofy merchandise will be made available to the international market as well.
Number one on The Walt Disney Co.'s slate for '92, Goofy mania is about to begin, so there's no telling what could happen next. Stay tuned -- it promises to be fun-filled, entertaining and well, just plain Goofy.
