THE VONS COMPANIES INC. ANNOUNCES AGREEMENT WITH ADVANCED PROMOTION TECHNOLOGIES

ARCADIA, Calif., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The Vons Companies Inc. (NYSE: VON) of Arcadia, today announced an agreement in principle with Advanced Promotion Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: APTV) of Deerfield Beach, Fla., to install the Vision Value Network(TM) in all of The Vons Companies' 345 stores, and for Vons to become an equity investor in Advanced Promotion Technologies. Vons is the market share leader in Southern California, the largest U.S. market area ranked by supermarket sales volume. Advanced Promotion Technologies is the developer of Vision Value Network, a multimedia network for electronic marketing and financial services at supermarket checkout counters.
Under the agreement, Vons will use the Vision Value Network to deliver a combination of electronic marketing programs developed by Advanced Promotion Technologies, along with VonsClub promotion programs. The network will also be used to deliver financial services to consumers, such as credit, electronic check and automated check approval.
The joint agreement in principle also calls for Vons to make a $5 million equity on investment in Advanced Promotion Technologies at approximately $7 per share and for the companies to become development partners on future technology products. "This is the first time in the supermarket industry that a large retailer has taken such an aggressive position on electronic marketing," says Dennis K. Eck, Vons president and chief operating officer. "Our investment in Advanced Promotion Technologies is consistent with the strategy that Vons has worked diligently to develop. We believe that efficiencies must be built into the system' so that both retailers and manufacturers can operate more effectively and then pass these savings directly to consumers."
Additionally, a representative from Vons will join Advanced Promotion Technologies' board of directors. Other members of the board include representatives from Procter & Gamble, Schlumberger and A.C. Nielsen. "The time has come for a new relationship between retailers and manufacturers. We can use electronic marketing as one of the key platforms on which to build this relationship. By definition, electronic marketing takes outdated promotion and pricing practices and uses technology to make them more efficient.
"After evaluating all currently available alternatives, we have concluded that the combination of Advanced Promotion Technologies' electronic marketing and financial services programs, along with our own retailer-based programs, is the best solution. The Vision Value Network is unique because it uses in-store multimedia to communicate with consumers, which brings dramatic efficiencies to the promotion process," says Eck.
"The Vision Value Network is designed to be the standard interface between the consumer and companies that want to reach the consumer on a targeted basis," says David R. Humble, Advanced Promotion Technologies' chief executive officer. "We have completed extensive testing of our system and now have nationally projectable results that show the Vision Value Network is the most effective vehicle for communicating with consumers."
The Vons Companies Inc., headquartered in Arcadia, is the ninth largest supermarket chain in the nation and the market share leader in Southern California. Utilizing supermarket and food and drug combination store formats, the company operates 345 stores in Southern California and Clark County, Nev.
Advanced Promotion technologies develops and markets the Vision Value Network, which delivers money-saving retailer and manufacturer benefits to shoppers in the form of paperless coupons, paper coupons, recipes and sweepstakes. The network also includes a frequent shopper program for consumers to earn points toward free gifts. Each Vision terminal can be used to process financial service transactions such as credit, electronic check and automated check approval. The Vision Value Network uses full-motion video, voice and print to communicate with shoppers at each checkout lane. The company is the originator of multimedia electronic marketing for supermarkets and offers the only full service electronic marketing and financial service terminal in the industry.
