THE TOPPS COMPANY, INC. FORMS COMIC BOOK DIVISION
NEW YORK, March 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The Topps Company, Inc.,

(NASDAQ: TOPP) today announced the formation of Topps Comics, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary which will create and market high-quality color comic books.
Jim Salicrup, a veteran of the comic book industry well-known for his editing achievements on Marvel Comics' best-selling "Spiderman" titles, has assumed the position of editor-in-chief. Ira Friedman, Topps vice president/publishing & new project development, has been named publisher.
Arthur T. Shorin, Topps chairman, said, "Topps' entry into the comic book category is a logical extension of our core business of sports and other collectible picture products. Topps' brand name is a valuable asset which can contribute to the success of this exciting new venture.
"Ira Friedman and Jim Salicrup offer just the right blend of talent with plenty of hands-on experience."
Salicrup said, "In building the Topps Comics line, we will tap both the company's in-house talent pool and prominent outside comics creators -- writers, pencilers, inkers, colorists and designers. Our comic books will emphasize quality and seek to target niche markets not addressed by other comics publishers."
Friedman stated, "Topps Comics will leverage our ability to create and market products for collector-oriented consumers." Topps Comics' debut title, to be announced shortly, is scheduled for release this fall, with several additional titles slated for introduction throughout 1993.
Topps is well-known for its collectible picture products, which feature sports and other themes, its Bazooka brand bubble gum and entertaining candy products.
