THE TIMKEN COMPANY TO INCREASE ITS COMMITMENT IN JAPAN
CANTON, Ohio, June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The Timken Company (NYSE: TKR) announced today that it intends to increase substantially its commitment to serving its Japanese bearing markets. "Our customer base in Japan continues to grow and, as a result, we are expanding our presence there," said Peter J. Ashton, executive vice president - bearings. "We have earned a solid reputation with our Japanese customers not only as a bearing manufacturer but as a bearing innovator. Our current plans will allow us to broaden our range of engineering services both near and long term.
"Our commitment at this point is to expand the technical support services offered through Nihon Timken K.K. by implementing the first step of a business and engineering center in Japan," said Ashton. "This is the direct result of the increased recognition and reception we are enjoying in Japan. We are seeing real progress, which comes from our dedicated and strategic effort to develop a significant position in the Japanese marketplace."
Ashton indicated that the company is beginning to supply important volumes of bearings to the major Japanese automotive manufacturers and to other Japanese industrial manufacturers. "The Timken Company's business in Japan increased substantially in 1991," he said, "and we believe there are excellent opportunities for further rapid growth."
By Sept. 1, Nihon Timken will move into substantially larger quarters in Yokohama. The addition of space will allow the company to increase both its engineering and support staff, and thus expand its engineering and customer services in Japan. Nihon Timken will offer a full range of customer engineering support services including application design and engineering, service engineering and new product development. The current plan also includes computer-to- computer interface between the Japanese facility and corporate headquarters in Canton, Ohio.
The Timken Company has been represented in Japan since the early 1930s, and Nihon Timken K.K., a wholly owned sales subsidiary, was established in Tokyo in 1974. During the past 18 years, the company has worked with Japanese manufacturers, providing quality tapered roller bearings along with outstanding technical expertise.
At Nihon Timken, the company currently employs Japanese nationals living and working in Japan, the majority of whom are engineers trained as Timken bearing specialists. These graduate engineers, who receive their training at corporate headquarters are supported by a worldwide team dedicated to provide quality products to Japan along with excellent customer service, the company's hallmark.
Nihon Timken's current general manager, Tadao Tsuneyoshi, will be relocating to Canton to prepare for future enhancements in the business and engineering center. "In his new position as general manager - technology center project - Japan, Tad is being charged with determining more extensive and comprehensive technical services capabilities for the Japanese market," Ashton explained. "To meet projected customer requirements, we anticipate that this will include providing more enhanced product development capabilities as well as physical testing facilities appropriate to our customer base."
Tsunyoshi will be responsible for all aspects of the planning and installation of the enhanced capability in Japan and will investigate more effective ways of technologically interfacing with Japanese industry. "Tad has been a key person in the growth of our activities in Japan," Ashton said. "He will bring to this project the first-hand knowledge and experience important to its formation and success."
Richard J. Ruffell will replace Tsuneyoshi as general manager - Nihon Timken K.K. and will be responsible for all aspects of Nihon Timken's activities.
Tsuneyoshi began his career with The Timken Company in 1975 as an associate sales engineer.
