THE STANLEY WORKS ACQUIRES FRIESS & CO. KG

 NEW BRITAIN, Conn., July 30 /PRNewswire/ -- R. Alan Hunter, president and chief operating officer of The Stanley Works (NYSE: SWK), today announced the acquisition of Friess & Co. KG, a German manufacturer and marketer of paint rollers and brushes. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
 Mr. Hunter said, "Decorator tools and products offer excellent growth potential for Stanley in the U.S., Canada and Europe. Friess is a top-quality manufacturer of paint rollers and a well-known, established brand for rollers and paint brushes throughout Europe. This acquisition demonstrates Stanley's intent to continue growing this key product category."
 He added, "The company employs 270 at its manufacturing operation in Wieseth, Germany and will operate as a subsidiary of Stanley Tools- Europe, reporting to Thomas N. Jones, president and general manager."
 Mr. Jones commented about the acquisition, "This is an important strategic addition to our Mosley-Stone line of paint preparation and application products manufactured in the U.K. Having a facility in Germany significantly strengthens our competitive position for decorator products in continental Europe."
 Stanley Tools-Europe is headquartered in Bracknell, U.K. and has manufacturing facilities in the U.K., France, Italy, Poland, Czechoslovakia and now, Germany.
 The Stanley Works is a worldwide manufacturer and marketer of tools, hardware and specialty hardware for home improvement, consumer, industrial and professional use.
