 THE SPORTS AUTHORITY RECORD 1991 SALES AND OPERATING INCOME
 ANNOUNCED BY KMART CORPORATION
 TROY, Mich., March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Kmart Corporation (NYSE: KM) today announced record 1991 sales and operating income for its Sports Authority subsidiary.
 For the 1991 year ended Jan. 29, 1992, The Sports Authority operating income was $3 million in contrast to an operating loss of $3 million in the 1990 year which covered the period from March 2, 1990, the date of acquisition, to Jan. 30, 1991. Operating income included goodwill amortization of $2 million in 1991 and 1990. Sales for the full year reached $241 million, an increase of 130 percent from the $105 million in the partial 1990 year. Comparable store sales increased 15.3 percent in 1991.
 In commenting on results, Jack A. Smith, president and chief executive officer of The Sports Authority, said, "This has been a banner year, with the company turning in a solid profit for the first time ever, and more than doubling in sales volume from 1990. This keeps us on track with our goal of 100 stores and $1 billion in sales volume by 1995. We have continued our expansion across the United States and are excited about our upcoming debut in the New York and Chicago metropolitan areas in 1992."
 The Sports Authority, a wholly owned subsidiary of Kmart Corporation, operates 36 The Sports Authority stores in 11 states. Kmart Corporation serves America with over 4,000 retail outlets in all 50 states in the United States and in Puerto Rico and Canada. Kmart, currently operating 2,375 Kmart stores, is also the parent company for PACE Membership Warehouse, Builders Square, Pay Less Drug Stores, Waldenbooks and OfficeMax.
 Kmart Corporation's stock is listed on the New York, Pacific and Midwest stock exchanges. Its trading symbol is KM.
