THE SPORTING NEWS SALUTES STAR PITCHER NOLAN RYAN; 'SO LONG, BIG TEX' -- A LOOK AT RYAN'S FINAL SEASON

ST. LOUIS, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The Sporting News features a 12-page pull-out special report, available on newsstands today, on Nolan Ryan's final season by baseball insider and senior writer Michael Knisley. The report looks at Ryan from spring training, to his time on the disabled list, to his well-publicized fight with Robin Ventura, to his Nolan Ryan Day, and to his final start in Seattle.
"The standards set by Nolan Ryan in a career that began three decades ago will stand tall for the ages. Ryan is a legend. A hero. A future Hall of Famer. And after 27 seasons, 324 victories, seven no- hitters and 5,714 strikeouts, it is finally time for Alvin, Texas' most famous rancher to ride off," writes Knisley, who spent time with Ryan at key intervals during the season.
Exclusive commentary from Ryan himself is included in The Sporting News' special report which unfolds the story of Ryan's last season as a big league pitcher. "My style of pitching seems to have been lost somewhere in baseball," Ryan says in Boston's Fenway Park, "I mean, it's antiquated now. It's just another reason why I feel like it's time for me to get out, because I'm not going to change. I have to do what I think is right."
An exclusive time line, beginning on April 30, 1966, of Nolan Ryan's distinguished career as covered by The Sporting News, is also included.
The Sporting News, a Times Mirror publication, is known as "the bible of sports." It is the oldest continuously published sports publication in the country.
