THE SOFTWARE TOOLWORKS SHIPS CHESSMASTER 4000 TURBO FOR WINDOWS; NEW WORLD CHAMPION 32-BIT CHESS ENGINE SIZZLES

NOVATO, Calif., Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The Software Toolworks Inc. (NASDAQ: TWRX), the world's leading supplier of CD-ROM software, today announced shipment of the floppy disk version of Chessmaster(R) 4000 Turbo for the Windows(TM) platform. The all-new Chessmaster 4000 Turbo, the latest version of the world's most popular chess program, gives chess enthusiasts their most challenging opponent to date.
"Chessmaster 4000 Turbo represents a quantum leap in computer-based chess simulation that will please beginners as well as seasoned competitors disappointed by weaker chess games," said Bob Lloyd, president and chief executive officer of The Software Toolworks. "In developing the new program, we have drawn on our seven years of experience as the leader in the filed of computer chess to produce an uncompromising product that offers truly remarkable competition, patient tutelage and beautifully detailed, 3-D graphics."
Powered by a 32-bit version of the chess engine that won the 1992 World Computer Chess Championship, Chessmaster 4000 Turbo introduces realistic opponent personalities, enhanced chess tutorials, stunning texture-mapped chess pieces and boards, and multiple-player support over modems and networks.
 Multiple Personalities
Players may compete against opponents drawn from a library of personalities, each with its own unique levels of comprehension and particular playing styles, including actual chess champions like Fischer and Karpov, or generic players like Pawngrabber and Newcomer.
Players can also create their own opponents. Newly-expanded parameters in Chessmaster 4000 Turbo allow players to fine-tune and customize opponents' play for qualities like contempt for draw, control of center and king mobility.
Additionally, they can face off against famous opponents in any one of 30 specially-selected classic games and try to predict the correct moves. At the end, The Chessmaster will rate their performance.
 Chessmaster as a Mentor
Chessmaster 4000 Turbo provides 10 new teaching mode displays that are updated as a game progresses. These displays include threatened pieces, pinned pieces, isolated pawns and promote threats (situations where a pawn is on the verge of being exchanged for a more powerful piece.)
Finally, a new interactive animated tutorial, written by former United States Chess National Champion Yasser Seirawan, has been added to coach the developing player.
Gain a Clearer Understanding of Gameplay
Chessmaster 3000's exclusive Natural Language Analysis feature, which gave players on-screen advice in conversational English on how to move and why, has now been upgraded with an expanded vocabulary. Given any position, the analyzer will describe the recommended move and the predicted continuation. Furthermore, the advanced analytical features of the new TASC engine ensure more accurate and sophisticated play analysis. No other chess program offers such detailed analyses and advice.
A new chess auto-annotator feature analyzes previously-played games, using a combination of Natural Language Analysis and canned book comments. The annotator discusses good, bad and alternative lines of play.
 Play Anyone You Want
Friends can't come over to play a game of chess? No problem. Chessmaster 4000 Turbo includes network and modem connectivity that ties together players across the hall or across the country.
Chessmaster 4000 Turbo supports a wide range of modems, including any Hayes-compatible device. All major PC networks are supported.

Chessmaster 4000 Turbo is available now for Windows and has a suggested retail price of $59.95. Chessmaster 4000 Turbo will be available for MPC (CD-ROM Windows) in the first quarter of 1994 and MS-DOS in the second quarter of 1994.
