NOVATO, Calif., Aug. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The Software Toolworks Inc. (NASDAQ: TWRX), the world's leading supplier of CD-ROM software, and Digital Audio Disc Corp., a subsidiary of Sony USA Inc., today announced the pressing of The Software Toolworks' three millionth CD-ROM (Compact Disk-Read Only Memory).
The pressed CD-ROM was the MPC (CD-ROM Windows(TM)) version of The Software Toolworks' award-winning "The San Diego Zoo(TM) Presents ... The Animals!(TM)." To commemorate the occasion, Sony presented the Software Toolworks with a specially mounted version of the 3,000,000th CD-ROM. Digital Audio Disc Corp., in Terre Haute, Ind., is the largest optical disc manufacturing facility in the world.
"We have been proud to have The Software Toolworks as a key customer for over three years," said Bob Hurley, vice president of media and software services for Sony's Recorded Media Division. "During that time, we have manufactured all 45 of their CD-ROM titles. Three million units has special significance given the consumer markets in which the titles were sold and the short duration in which The Software Toolworks achieved this milestone."
Bob Lloyd, The Software Toolworks Inc. president and chief executive officer said, "At The Software Toolworks we use creative concepts, innovative content, and state-of-the-art technology to develop, publish and market compelling consumer software. The technological advances represented by CD-ROM allow us to accomplish this mission. With CD-ROM we can combine audio, video, text and graphics to create deep, rich products. Our relationship with Sony USA assures our customers that these products are manufactured to the highest quality."
A computer CD-ROM can store vast amounts of information because it uses laser light to record data in a form that's more tightly packed than the form that the magnetic read/write heads of a conventional drive can manage. A single CD-ROM can store up to 640 megabytes of data. This huge storage capacity makes CD-ROMs the perfect medium for multimedia systems, which use video and sound files that are, typically, mammoth.
"The Software Toolworks will continue to use CD-ROM technology to aggressively expand the market for multimedia products," continued Lloyd. "We will leverage the experience we gained in the adult edutainment, interactive information, and multimedia reference markets to expand into new markets including multimedia entertainment, children's edutainment and interactive family products."
Examples of new multimedia Software Toolworks products include "Mario is Missing!(TM) CD Deluxe," a children's edutainment title, "The Software Toolworks(R) Presents ... Oceans Below," a multimedia exploration of the world of SCUBA diving, and "The Software Toolworks(R) 20th Century Video Almanac," a look at the last 100 years of history through video, photographs, narration and text.
The Software Toolworks Inc. develops, publishes and distributes entertainment and edutainment products on disc and CD-ROM for Macintosh(R) and IBM(R) PC and compatible computers; multimedia reference products for Macintosh(R) and IBM(R) platforms; and entertainment products for Sega(TM) Genesis(TM), Game Boy(R), Nintendo Entertainment System(R), and Super Nintendo Entertainment Systems(R).
The Software Toolworks is headquartered in Novato, with offices in Chatsworth, Calif.; Naperville, Ill.; London; Dusseldorf, Germany; Paris and Castle Hill, Australia. The company is listed on NASDAQ under TWRX.
Digital Audio Disc Corp., a subsidiary of Sony Corp. of America (NYSE: SNE), is the largest and most advanced optical disc manufacturing facility in the world, with a production capacity of more than 15 million discs per month in its two Terre Haute facilities. DADC's CD- ROM production capabilities include mastering, replication, creative services, packaging consulting and sourcing, fulfillment and client distribution.
