THE ROUSE COMPANY ANNOUNCES NEW OFFICERS

 COLUMBIA, Md., Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Mathias J. DeVito, chairman and chief executive officer of The Rouse Company (NASDAQ-NMS: ROUS), today announced the election of eight new senior vice presidents and four new vice presidents by the company's board of directors, to be effective immediately.
 The company's new senior vice presidents are: Jeffrey H. Donahue, chief financial officer; Duke S. Kassolis, director, Office and Mixed- Use Operations; Paul I. Latta Jr., director, Retail Operations; Robert Minutoli, director, Acquisitions; Robert D. Riedy, director, Retail Leasing; Alton J. Scavo, director, Community Development and general manager of Columbia; Jerome D. Smalley, director, Commercial and Office Development; and George L. Yungmann, controller.
 The new vice presidents are: Jody L. Clark, group director, Office and Mixed-use Operations; Patricia H. Dayton, also elected treasurer; David R. Schwiesow, associate general counsel; and Karen L. Weir, director of Specialty Retailing.

 BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE NEW OFFICERS OF THE ROUSE COMPANY
 Jeffrey H. Donahue will become senior vice president and chief financial officer, responsible for project and corporate financing, investor relations and cash management. Donahue joined The Rouse Company in 1973, and was appointed vice president and treasurer in 1979.
 Duke S. Kassolis will become senior vice president and director, Office and Mixed-Use Operations, responsible for the management of office, commercial and mixed-use properties. Kassolis joined the company in 1980 and was appointed vice president and director, Office and Commercial Properties in 1986.
 Paul I. Latta Jr. will become senior vice president and director, Retail Operations, responsible for the operations and management of all the company's retail projects. Latta joined The Rouse Company in 1970 and was appointed regional vice president and Associate Division director in 1990.
 Robert Minutoli will become senior vice president and director, Acquisitions, responsible for the company's acquisition/management program and will also oversee the provision of development services to the Christopher Columbus Center. Minutoli joined The Rouse Company in 1978 and was appointed vice president and senior development director in 1986.
 Robert D. Riedy will become senior vice president and director, Retail Leasing, responsible for the company's leasing effort for all retail projects. Riedy joined the company in 1968 and was appointed vice president and assistant director, Retail Leasing in 1977 and associate division head for commercial development in 1990.
 Alton J. Scavo will become senior vice president and director, community development and general manager of Columbia, responsible for company land development and sales in Columbia and elsewhere, as well as for the direction of the company's new community development activities. Scavo joined the company in 1969 and was appointed vice president and associate director, community development in 1980.
 Jerome D. Smalley will become senior vice president and director, Commercial and Office Development, responsible for the development of office, retail and mixed-use projects. Smalley joined the company in 1979 and was appointed vice president and associate director, Office Development in 1986.
 George L. Yungmann will become senior vice president and controller responsible for corporate accounting, taxes, internal audit and information systems. Yungmann joined the company in 1970 as assistant to the controller and was promoted to vice president and controller in 1984.
 Jody L. Clark will become vice president and group director, Office and Mixed-Use Operations, responsible for the leasing and management of the company's office and commercial properties in the Baltimore area, Columbia, North Carolina and Florida. Clark joined the company in 1984 and was promoted to senior group manager in 1992.
 Patricia H. Dayton will become vice president and treasurer, responsible for bank relations, bank financings and will be involved in the negotiation of corporate as well as project financings. Dayton joined the company in 1988 and was promoted to assistant treasurer in 1993.
 David R. Schwiesow will become vice president and associate general counsel, responsible for corporate legal matters, public reporting and related compliance and regulatory issues. Schwiesow joined the company in 1984 and was promoted to associate general counsel in 1989.
 Karen C. Weir will become vice president, director of Specialty Retailing, responsible for the new business effort to create and manage specialty retail programs for third party owners and for The Rouse Company. Weir joined the company in 1977 and was promoted to group director, Sales and Marketing, in 1983.
