THE RIVAL CO. REPORTS INCREASE IN EARNINGS

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The Rival Co. (NASDAQ: RIVL) reported an earnings increase of 30 percent for the quarter and 31.6 percent for the six months ended Dec. 31, 1992.
Net earnings for the quarter ended Dec. 31, 1992, were $5.7 million (61 cents per share) compared to $4.4 million (73 cents per share) in the prior year. For the six months ended Dec. 31, 1992, net earnings improved to $8.6 million (92 cents) from $6.5 million ($1.06) in the prior year. The lower earnings per share reflect an additional 3.7 million shares outstanding in the current year as a result of the company's initial public offering (IPO) in June 1992. Earnings per share on a pro-forma basis (as adjusted as if the IPO occurred at the beginning of the prior year) increased 8 cents (15 percent) for the quarter and 10 cents (12 percent) for the six months ended Dec. 31, 1992, as compared to the like periods in the prior year.
Sales increased 5 percent for the quarter to $65.5 million. The increased sales were the result of the acquisition of Simer Pump, a $22 million manufacturer and marketer of sump, utility and other pumps, during September 1992. For the six months, sales declined 4 percent as sales of new products including the Cookie Factory(TM), a countertop cookie maker, were not sufficient to offset decreases in sales of last years "hot housewares" products which were sandwich makers and hand blenders. Additionally, retailers began the winter with large inventories of space heaters due to mild weather in the prior year, resulting in decreased sales in this product category. The decline in heater sales more than offset sales of Simer Pump products during the period.
Operating margins as a percentage of sales increased from 14.3 percent to 15.4 percent due to sales mixed together with better manufacturing efficiency and cost controls.
The Simer Pump acquisition which was completed on Sept. 15, 1992, had only a modest impact on sales and earnings through December. Thomas K. Manning, president and chief executive officer, said, "The Simer integration has gone better than we ever imagined. All pump production was moved into our Warrensburg, Missouri facility 30 days ahead of schedule. Simer production and sales are exceeding our most optimistic forecasts. Historically, 65 percent of Simer sales are in the second half of our fiscal year. Considering recent heavy rains and the seasonality of the product, we expect Simer to make significant contributions to sales and profits during the second half."
At the NHMA Housewares Show in Chicago during January, the company introduced a line of water filtration products and several enhancements to its existing product lines. Referring to conversations with the company's customers at the show, Manning said, "Our customers generally had good Holiday sales and are focused on planning their spring assortments and promotions. Retail inventories seem to be lower than in recent years, and this should help our spring sales."
The Rival Co. is a leading manufacturer and marketer of small household appliances. The company sells approximately 20 different product lines of kitchen heating appliances, kitchen motor-driven appliances, and other small electrics. Its products include slow cookers (Crock Pot(R)), can openers, space heaters, ice cream freezers and simmering potpourri cookers (Potpourri Crock(R)). Over 90 percent of the products sold by the company are manufactured by the company in the United States.
