THE PSAT -- NOT JUST ANOTHER PRACTICE EXAM

ATLANTA, Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- High school juniors who want to improve next year's SAT score should look to their PSAT score.
This month, 1.5 million juniors and seniors will receive their PSAT scores. Many students don't know this score is an effective study guide for the SAT. By taking their PSAT score to their local Sylvan Learning Center, students can learn from the questions they missed on the PSAT and improve their SAT results.
Students can obtain a copy of their PSAT questions and answers from their school counselor and then take the results to Sylvan where a trained educator will review the questions they missed with them, usually for no charge. This review session can help pinpoint students' trouble spots. With the information gained from reviewing the PSAT results, the student is more focused and productive when preparing for the SAT and studying for regular class work.
To identify the skills needed to solve the kinds of questions the student missed, Sylvan educators use analysis of test questions developed by Dr. Gary Gruber, a nationally recognized authority on standardized test-taking. He is the first to have decoded the PSAT to the exact strategies and skills used, enabling students to correct faulty thinking approaches that may hold down their scores on the SAT. Gruber is the author of 26 books that have sold 5 million copies.
Gruber's test-taking strategies have been adopted nationwide by Sylvan Learning Centers, part of North America's largest after-school tutoring service. Sylvan offers a course that teaches critical thinking strategies and prepares students for the SAT. (SAT test dates are Jan. 23, March 27, May 1 and June 5.)
"If students can identify the types of problems they missed on the PSAT, they can learn the critical thinking strategy to solve those problems and their SAT score will show significant improvement," said Gruber.
