THE PENN TRAFFIC COMPANY ANNOUNCES THE APPOINTMENT OF EUGENE SUNDERHAFT AS CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER

 JOHNSTOWN, Pa., April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The Penn Traffic Company (AMEX: PNF) announced today its appointment of Eugene Sunderhaft as vice president, finance, and chief financial officer, effective May 15, 1993.
 He replaces John M. Kriak, who will be leaving the company to become the executive vice president and chief operating officer of Crown Holdings Company.
 Sunderhaft has been employed with the company's P&C Division since 1973, most recently as vice president, finance, and chief financial officer. Sunderhaft joined P&C after being employed as an accountant by Ernst & Young. Sunderhaft graduated from the University of Dayton in 1970 with a B.S. degree in accounting.
 Gary D. Hirsch, chairman of the board, stated, "We are excited about Gene Sunderhaft playing a greater role in the leadership of our company. Gene has consistently demonstrated his abilities as chief financial officer of Penn Traffic's P&C Division, contributing importantly to that division's solid progress."
 Hirsch continued, "We are very appreciative of the many contributions that John Kriak has made to the growth of Penn Traffic during his 17 years of service to the company. We wish him the greatest success in his new endeavors."
 Penn Traffic announced that the company will be consolidating its corporate headquarters in Syracuse, N.Y., during the summer of 1993. The company currently employs about 20 people at its Johnstown corporate headquarters. Penn Traffic will continue to employ approximately 700 associates at other Johnstown area locations.
 The Penn Traffic Company is one of the leading food retailers in the Eastern United States, operating 218 supermarkets in Western Pennsylvania, upstate New York, Ohio and Northern West Virginia, under the names Riverside Markets, Bi-Lo Foods, Quality Markets, P&C Foods, Big Bear and Big Bear Plus. Additionally, Penn Traffic operates a wholesale food distribution business serving 133 licensed franchisees and 127 independent operators and a discount general merchandise business with 17 stores. Grand Union, in which Penn Traffic holds a 17.8 percent equity interest, operates supermarkets in the Eastern United States.
