THE NWNL COMPANIES ANNOUNCES SALE OF $120 MILLION OF NOTES

 MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The NWNL Companies (NYSE: NWN) announced today that it has sold $120 million of 6-5/8 percent notes due in the year 2003.
 The notes were priced at 99.829 to yield 6.648 percent and may not be called until the due date.
 The company said it intends to use the proceeds from the sale of the notes to retire $100 million of 10-1/4 percent notes in 1994 and prepay bank debt. The underwriters of the note offering are Merrill Lynch & Co. and Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette Securities Corp. The notes will be listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
 The NWNL Companies is a Minneapolis-based holding company specializing in the life and health insurance and annuity businesses.
