THE NEWS CORPORATION LIMITED CHAIRMAN RUPERT MURDOCH ISSUES STATEMENT

LONDON, Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Mr. Rupert Murdoch, Chairman and Chief Executive of The News Corporation Limited (NYSE: NWS), issued the following statement:
"At the News Corporation Annual Meeting of Shareholders held on Oct. 12, I announced that the Company's Board of Directors proposed the introduction of a new class of super-voting shares. The proposal was made to facilitate the negotiation of strategic alliances with other companies.
"The announcement emphasized the necessity for prompt action by the Australian Stock Exchange to change its listing rules to permit issuance of super-voting shares so that News Corporation would not be competitively disadvantaged in seeking the opportunities presented by such strategic alliances.
"As a consequence of the recent discussions between the Attorney General of Australia and the Chairman of the Australian Stock Exchange, it has become apparent that definitive action with respect to the News Corporation super-voting share proposal will not occur for many months. Accordingly, the Company's Board of Directors at its regular meeting held in London on December 7 has authorized the withdrawal of the proposal made to the Australian Stock Exchange. News Corporation has this date formally advised the Exchange of this decision."
