THE NEW YORK TIMES NAMES THREE CRITICS TO NEW APPOINTMENTS

NEW YORK, Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Three critics of The New York Times received new appointments today from Max Frankel, executive editor of The Times.
David Richards was named chief drama critic. Janet Maslin will become chief film critic and Vincent Canby the Sunday drama critic. The appointments will take effect Dec. 1.
Mr. Richards, 53 years old, has been Sunday drama critic since 1990. He will succeed Frank Rich, who served as chief drama critic for 13 years and was named last month to be an Op-Ed columnist, starting Jan. 1, 1994.
Before joining The Times, Mr. Richards served for nine years as theater critic for The Washington Post, a position he had previously held for 10 years at The Washington Star. He is a graduate of Occidental College and holds masters degrees in French and in speech and drama. He has taught French in high school and college and is the author of "Played Out: The Jean Seberg Story," which was published by Random House in 1981.
Mr. Canby, 69, an author and playwright, became The Times's chief film critic in 1969, after working as a cultural news reporter at The Times and a theater and film reporter and critic at Variety and other journals. He is the author of "Unnatural Scenery," a novel published by Knopf in 1979 and three full-length plays, including "End of the War," produced by the Ensemble Studio Theater in 1978.
Ms. Maslin, 44, was a film editor and critic at The Boston Phoenix and, briefly, a critic at Newsweek before joining The Times as a film critic in 1977. She has also been a freelance contributor to Rolling Stone and other publications, writing about film, theater, popular music and essays on popular culture in many sections of The Times.
