THE NEW YORK TIMES NAMES JOHN R. O'REILLY PRESIDENT OF DISTRIBUTION COMPANY

/ADVANCE/NEW YORK, March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The New York Times today announced the appointment of John R. O'Reilly as president of City & Suburban Delivery Systems, the wholesale newspaper distribution company that delivers The Times and many other publications to news dealers and home delivery depots in the greater New York area. The announcement was made by John M. O'Brien, executive vice president and deputy general manager of The Times.
Mr. O'Reilly, 44, comes to The Times from Simon & Schuster, where he was president of the Distribution Services Division since 1989. There he was responsible for worldwide sales and marketing functions for various Simon & Schuster product lines, plus those of outside client publishers. Prior to that, from 1984 to 1989, he had been president and CEO of Select Magazines, Inc., a magazine and book distribution company.
"We are delighted to have an executive of Mr. O'Reilly's experience and talents to help us deepen our commitment to the wholesale distribution business," Mr. O'Brien said. "His acumen in growing the revenue side of distribution services will benefit both The Times and the client publications we deliver."
As president of Simon & Schuster's Distribution Services Division, Mr. O'Reilly helped achieve record sales volume within the Consumer Group. While there, he developed retail chain solicitations to increase distribution at supermarkets and mass merchandisers while also redirecting telemarketing efforts to enhance retail exposure of product.
From 1977 to 1984 he was with Dell Publishing Company, Inc. He served as vice president of sales, in 1983 and 1984, after spending five years as vice president and chief financial officer. While heading sales he developed national marketing programs, both for books and magazines, for proprietary as well as client publications. Before joining Dell, he spent five years with Doubleday & Company, Inc., where he was assistant corporate controller.
Mr. O'Reilly holds two degrees from the University of Georgia, a B.S. in economics and an M.B.A. in finance.
City and Suburban Delivery Systems was formed in June 1992 as part of The Times's acquisition of two of the major newspaper wholesale distribution companies in the greater New York metropolitan area. That company now serves as a major distribution arm of The Times and also distributes more than 120 other publications. David A. Thurm, The Times's executive director for project development, has been overseeing these businesses on an interim basis, Mr. O'Brien said, and will now return to The Times full time.
