THE NEW YEAR'S HONOURS LIST: Macca makes it an MBE.

GARY McALLISTER has ended a spectacular footballing year with an MBE in the New Year's Honours List.

The 37-year-old former Scotland captain and Liverpool midfielder, famous for THAT penalty miss against England in Euro 96, was awarded the gong for services to the game.

Macca, who is celebrating 20 years in football has been credited with inspiring Liverpool's five cup final victories this year including the UEFA Cup and the FA Cup.

He said: "I feel very honoured and humbled.

" I thank every team I have ever played for - Motherwell, Leicester, Leeds, Coventry, Liverpool and Scotland.

"This award is the perfect end to a perfect year."

Former Scotland national coach Craig Brown insisted: "The highest praise I can give him is to say to young kids if they are looking for a role model in Scottish football they should look no further than Gary McAllister."
