THE NATURE CONSERVANCY RECEIVES $1 MILLION
 CONTRIBUTION FROM MILLER BREWING COMPANY
WASHINGTON, Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- The Nature Conservancy today announced a $1 million contribution from Miller Brewing Company to support the organization's "Last Great Places" initiative.
"The Last Great Places" are 12 working models for large-scale ecosystem conservation throughout the Western Hemisphere. Each incorporates plans for compatible economic activity, along with the preservation of species of natural systems. The program, whose objective is to save outstanding remaining ecosystems in the United States, was unveiled in May 1991.
"We are pleased to have the support of a visible, progressive corporate citizen like Miller Brewing Company," said John C. Sawhill, president of the Nature Conservancy. "This contribution gives the 'Last Great Places' project important visibility and momentum."
"This significant contribution to the Nature Conservancy embodies Miller Brewing Company's environmental commitment and philosophy," said Warren H. Dunn, Miller president and chief executive officer. "The Nature Conservancy's approach to preservation through cooperation between public and private interests makes good sense for business, private citizens and the environment. Their vision for environmental protection is one we share."
The preserves include such diverse landscapes as wetlands, prairies and tropical rain forests. The initial "Last Great Places" located in the U.S. are: Tallgrass Prairie Preserve, Oklahoma; The Florida Keys; Nipomo Dunes, California; Peconic/Block Island, New York and Rhode Island; Gray Ranch, New Mexico; Virginia Coast Reserve; Texas Hill Country; and Big Darby Creek, Ohio.
Nature Conservancy officials said they are working with the company to develop a volunteer program for Miller employees to become involved in conservation efforts. "Last Great Places" preserves are found in four of Miller's seven plant states.
Miller Brewing Company, the nation's second largest brewer, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Philip Morris Companies Inc.
The Nature Conservancy is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to rare and endangered species by preserving the habitats in which they survive. Since 1951, the organization has protected more than 6.3 million acres in the U.S. and helped partner organizations protect an additional 25 million acres abroad.
