THE NATIONAL MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION HONORS ALLEN F. JACOBSON AS
 AMERICAN MANAGER OF THE YEAR
ST. PAUL, Minn., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Management Association (NMA) has presented its 1992 American Manager of the Year Award to Allen F. Jacobson, retired chairman of the board and chief executive officer, 3M (NYSE: MMM). The award is presented annually by the 30 national co-sponsoring organizations of Management Week in America.
For the past decade, the first week in June has been designated Management Week, and this award presentation culminates a series of events designed to recognize management as a profession and the important role that managers play in our economic system.
The award represents one of the country's highest management distinctions. It is presented to an "executive whose leadership, integrity and management skills have profoundly, visibly and favorably influenced the outstanding performance of a key element of American business, industry or governmental activity, such as to set the person apart among contemporaries." James W. Ulm, chairman of the board, the NMA, made the presentation Aug. 25, during a luncheon held at 3M corporate headquarters in St. Paul. Ulm said, "3M's performance continues to remain a step ahead in implementing key standards. 3M recognized that the pace of change in the '90s was dictating different performance standards than the '80s. 3M recognized that what was unique yesterday ... is second-rate today.
"3M has focused on the principles of its operation -- quality improvement, technological innovation and the translation of that innovation into the marketplace advantage, customer orientation. Throughout the entire corporation a philosophy is stressed -- PEOPLE.
"At 3M, training and education is a year-round commitment. 3M concentrates on all levels of its employee team -- continually investing in the intellectual attributes that lead to productive growth. It is this ongoing commitment to quality that enables 3M to consistently introduce new products ... before the competition.
"The individual who spearheaded 3M's tremendous strides in quality, sales and profits epitomizes what the American Manager of the Year Award represents."
Jacobson joins past American Manager of the Year Award recipients: Jack F. Welch Jr., chairman and CEO, General Electric Company; Dr. P. Roy Vagelos, chairman and CEO, Merck & Company; Donald E. Petersen, chairman and CEO, Ford Motor Company; Kenneth H. Olsen, president, Digital Equipment Corp.; Stanley C. Gault, chairman and CEO, Rubbermaid, Inc.; Roger B. Smith, chairman and CEO, General Motors Corp.; J.W. Marriott Jr., president and CEO, Marriott Corp.; and former President Ronald Reagan. (Titles at year of presentation.)
In nominating Jacobson for the award, the co-sponsoring organizations noted: "Under Mr. Jacobson's leadership, 3M has become synonymous with outstanding levels of competence and dedication -- a direct reflection of the chairman."
The NMA was formed in 1925. Composed of a membership of more than 60,000 professional managers, the NMA today serves as an umbrella organization for the Management Week in America, representing 30 co- sponsoring organizations of varied management disciplines.
The NMA is a nationally recognized leader in professional management training.
