THE NAKED SCRAMBLER; Cheeky walker in prison protest.

THE Naked Rambler became the naked scrambler yesterday as he staged a protest at a Scots jail.

Eccentric ex-Royal Marine Stephen Gough shimmied up a 20ft pole at Saughton Prison in Edinburgh after a fall-out with wardens.

He snapped after being ordered to wear his prison issue jogging pants and top.

Gough, 46, carried a sign, defiantly saying: "No shame - I am human", as he took up the position at the top of the pole.

One prisoner said: "The guy came out for exercise as normal but decided he wasn't going to wear his prison clothes. He is always bleating on about it and it's always a matter of time before he gets in the buff. Our prisoners were laughing and shouting at him. It brightened up our day. A spokesman for the Scottish Prison Service said: "A man did mount a pole in the prison and refused to come down for some time.

"It did not affect the general running of the prison."

Gough was carried to the ground after almost two hours using a JCB with a "cherry- picker" platform.

He is due for release at the end of the year from his latest three-month prison stretch after persistently parading in the nude.

Gough was jailed for two weeks on September 9 for a breach of the peace while on his naked walk covering the length of Britain.

He was released from Saughton in September after serving half his sentence - but didn't make it beyond the gates before stripping off again.
