THE MOST POPULAR USE OF HIGH-TECH ATHLETIC SHOES? DOING NOTHING

DOUGLASSVILLE, Pa., Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- These days there are high-tech athletic shoes for virtually every type of sporting endeavor ... but, guess what, most of their owners wear them to do nothing.
In a recent survey conducted for Kiwi Brands, more than 90 percent of the respondents said they wear athletic footwear for leisure.
Despite steep price tags that often run to more than $100, and performance claims that you'll run faster or jump higher, wearing athletic shoes for athletic purposes ranks only third among uses by a cross-section of working professionals.
This prevalence of wearing pricey athletic shoes for everyday leisure may explain why consumers report they're more interested in keeping them clean, and are demanding of new types of sneaker care products, according to Kiwi Brands Product Manager Carey Sands-Bohrer.
"We try to stay on top of all the athletic shoe trends to help keep these $100 `investments' looking good no matter what they're used for," she said.
The second most popular use for athletic shoes was household chores, identified by 63.1 percent of the respondents.
Then came sports activities, with 62.3 percent, followed by social occasions (47.6 percent) and going to and from work (43.7 percent).
The survey was conducted by New York-based Audits & Surveys as part of an on-going Kiwi Brands study of trends in footwear utilization and care by the American public.
