THE MIGHTY DUCKS SET TO PLAY AT THE POND IN ANAHEIM FOR '93-'94

ANAHEIM, Calif., March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The Walt Disney Co.'s (NYSE: DIS) National Hockey League expansion franchise will face off in Anaheim's new sports arena for the 1993-94 season, it was announced today by Michael Eisner, Disney's chairman and chief executive officer, Gary Bettman, commissioner of the NHL, and Bruce McNall, chairman of the NHL Board of Governors and owner of the Los Angeles Kings.
Disney, the City of Anaheim, and Ogden Entertainment Services, the company managing the arena for the City of Anaheim, signed an arena agreement opening the way for the new hockey team to take to the ice this fall.
"Everybody skated the extra mile so that The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim could begin play next season," Eisner said at ceremonies in the new arena. "We are excited to be in the NHL and eager to start play in this beautiful new sports facility. The Pond in Anaheim is a great home for our team."
Eisner named Jack Lindquist chairman of The Mighty Ducks and Tony Tavares as president of Disney Sports Enterprises Inc., which is the operating entity for The Mighty Ducks.
Disney Sports Enterprises is a separate subsidiary of The Walt Disney Co.
Lindquist continues as president of Disneyland in addition to his new position.
Tavares, 43, will be responsible for establishing and running the day-to-day operations of the expansion franchise.
A consultant for the past year, Tavares was president and chief executive officer of Spectacor Management Group, a major facilities management company.
After naming the new arena The Pond in Anaheim, Eisner invited the guests to join him in inaugurating a Mighty Ducks tradition: the blowing of duck calls each time the team is introduced or "called to The Pond" at home games and each time the team scores a goal.
One of the next conditions for the team to meet is the NHL requirement for final grant of membership that it sell at least 10,000 season tickets. The Pond in Anaheim seats 17,350.
Disney officials will announce a ticket price structure within the next 10 days. In the meantime, Mighty Ducks fans can call 800-HOCKEY4 to be added to the season ticket priority list which already has the names of the 9,500 fans who have made inquiries since the franchise was announced last December.
In other NHL expansion news, Bettman and Wayne Huizenga, chairman and chief executive officer, Blockbuster Entertainment, announced that Huizenga's Miami franchise would also begin play in 1993.
"I am thrilled to welcome the fans of Anaheim and South Florida to the NHL family for the 1993-94 season, " said Bettman. "It is a credit to both Disney and Blockbuster that they were able to accomplish so much in such a short period of time.
"We at the NHL are ecstatic to have these two great owners in the league and I look forward to working with Michael Eisner and Wayne Huizenga and their respective organizations."
Bruce McNall said, "This is a great day for the National Hockey League and we welcome Disney and my friend Michael Eisner to professional hockey. Not only do the Kings get another in-state rival, but the league gets a first class member."
The Disney franchise takes its name from last year's box office smash "The Mighty Ducks," the story of a youth hockey team that went from underdogs to heroes. The Walt Disney Pictures release starring Emilio Estevez grossed $50 million and will be available for video rental in April.
Disney is slated to release the sequel, "D2 The Champions," within the year, it was announced by Jeffrey Katzenberg, chairman, Walt Disney Studios. Disney is currently talking with Estevez about reprising his staring role. Jordan Kerner and John Avnet, producers of the first film, will produce the sequel and Steven Brill returns to write the script.
