THE MAY DEPARTMENT STORES COMPANY REPORTS SALES INCREASE 11.7 PERCENT IN DECEMBER

 ST. LOUIS, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The May Department Stores Company (NYSE: MA) today reported preliminary sales of $1.92 billion for the five-week period ended Jan. 2, an increase of 11.7 percent from sales of $1.72 billion during the same period last year. Sales have been adjusted to exclude the sales from stores with liquidation sales scheduled to close in January 1993.
 Year-to-date sales for the first 11 months of fiscal 1992 were $10.01 billion, up 7.8 percent from sales of $9.29 billion reported in the same period last year.
 Department store sales for December were $1.71 billion, an increase of 10.2 percent or $157.7 million from last year. Sales for Payless ShoeSource totaled $207.6 million, an increase of 25.9 percent or $42.8 million.

 (A) Store-for-store sales represent sales of those stores open during both years.
 Sales have been restated to exclude the sales of stores which are in process of closing or have been closed and not replaced. Year-to-date revenues, including sales of nonreplaced closed stores and finance charge revenue, were $10.58 billion in 1992 and $10.09 billion in 1991.
 The May Department Stores Company is the largest department store retailer in the United States, operating 320 department stores and 3,559 Payless ShoeSource stores.
