THE MATHWORKS SHIPS MATLAB 4.0 FOR SUN SOLARIS, DEC ULTRIX AND ALPHA/AXP SYSTEMS; EXTENDS TECHNICAL COMPUTING ENVIRONMENT FOR NUMERIC COMPUTATION

NATICK, Mass., Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The MathWorks, Inc. today announced availability of its technical computing environment, MATLAB(R) version 4.0, for Sun Solaris and Digital Equipment's (NYSE: DEC) Ultrix and Alpha/AXP systems.
MATLAB 4.0 is now available on all of the major workstation computer platforms. This introduction delivers MATLAB 4.0's comprehensive technical computing capabilities to technical professionals who use the following:
 -- Sun SPARC-based workstations running Solaris 2.1.
 -- Digital's 64-bit Alpha/AXP processor including the DEC 3000, DEC
4000 and DEC 7000 series running X Windows and OSF/1.2.
 -- Digital's RISC-based DECstation 2100, 3100 and 5000 systems, as
well as DECsystem 54xx and 58xx running DECwindows or X Windows.
"Engineers, scientists and other technical professionals who perform serious analysis and modeling today need high-performance computation, simulation, and visualization capabilities -- all seamlessly integrated at their desktop," said John N. Little, The MathWorks' president and chief executive officer. "These new platforms help MATLAB deliver the power and flexibility users need for solving problems in a broad range of demanding applications such as image processing, neural network design, control system simulation and design, and quantitative analysis.
"Since we are committed to an open system approach, we will continue to ensure that MATLAB and SIMULINK run on all popular engineering platforms such as Solaris and OSF/1," he added.
MATLAB is the most complete technical computing environment available today. It provides high-performance computation software, a high-level programming language, graphics, and application-specific toolboxes that enable users to quickly visualize and explore data and mathematical models as part of their everyday work. It also enables users to prototype, analyze and optimize engineer system designs and algorithms, and to explore new concepts in scientific research. Specific functionality includes object-oriented graphics, sparse matrix support, sound output, graphical user interface controls and hundreds of other math and graphics operations.
MATLAB 4.0 for SUN Solaris, DEC Ultrix and Alpha/AXP Systems is available immediately. MATLAB 4.0 is also available for Sun/OS, Hewlett- Packard Series 700, Macintosh, Silicon Graphics, IBM RS6000, and 386/486 PC systems. All MATLAB products can be networked in heterogeneous environments, enabling users of all these systems to share data files and user-written functions across platforms without converting or recompiling. Prices start at $2,995 for a single-seat workstation license, and quantity and educational discounts are available.
The MathWorks, Inc., based in Natick, Mass., develops, markets and supports high-performance software for interactive numerical computation, visualization and dynamic system simulation. The MathWorks' products are relied upon by more than 140,000 users at the world's leading commercial and government research laboratories and organizations, and educational institutions.
