THE MATHWORKS' STUDENT EDITION OF MATLAB BECOMES PRENTICE HALL'S FASTEST-SELLING ENGINEERING PRODUCT

THE MATHWORKS' STUDENT EDITION OF MATLAB BECOMES PRENTICE HALL'S
 FASTEST-SELLING ENGINEERING PRODUCT
NATICK, Mass., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The Student Edition of MATLAB from The MathWorks has become Prentice Hall's fastest-selling engineering product ever, with sales of 25,000 copies in just eight months to students at colleges and universities worldwide.
Educational institutions in which The Student Edition of MATLAB has been adapted for coursework include the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cornell University, Carnegie Mellon, Stanford University, Georgia Institute of Technology and the U.S. Air Force Academy. In addition, professors at many of these schools are using the professional version of MATLAB in their research.
The professional version of MATLAB merges the industry's most powerful and accurate numeric computation software, an easy-to-use fourth-generation programming language, outstanding graphics capabilities, with an extensive family of toolboxes for solving application-specific problems. The powerful mathematical foundation and ease of use of The Student Edition of MATLAB, a limited version of the professional software, is ideally suited for material covered in the traditional college curriculum.
Peter M. Janzow, senior editor, electrical and computer engineering at Prentice Hall, said, "The Student Edition of MATLAB is the fastest- selling engineering product we've ever had. There really isn't anything else out there right now that is a serious competitor. We've found academicians like MATLAB because it's an ideal mix of computational firepower and graphic visualization that can help students put theory into practice. Professional schools feel compelled to prepare students for the work world, and introducing them to MATLAB is an excellent way to do this, given its widespread use in industry and government."
MATLAB's unmatched combination of features allows users to analyze and visualize data; prototype, analyze and optimize engineering system designs and algorithms; and explore new concepts in scientific research. It also enables them to create mathematical models and solve systems of equations and perform general engineering and scientific computations -- all without leaving the MATLAB environment. Other Offerings Complement MATLAB in Academic Settings
The Student Edition of MATLAB is complemented by a number of other offerings from The MathWorks that benefit academic researchers, college professors and students. These include classroom kits to aid professors incorporating MATLAB into courses, and special site licensing agreements and on-site training to encourage the use of the Student Edition of MATLAB and MATLAB itself in educational settings.
Also, Prentice Hall has launched its MATLAB Curriculum Series, a selection of supplemental text for the following courses: digital signal processing, control theory, linear algebra, signals and systems. linear systems, numerical methods, applied mathematics and advanced engineering mathematics. Authors include Professors Dolores Etter of the Unversity of Colorado, David Hill of Temple Unversity, Al Oppenheim of MIT; Tom Parks of Cornell; Jim McClellan of Georgia Tech and Sid Burrus of Rice University. Macmillan and Addison-Wesley publishing houses are also designing textbooks for use with The Student Edition of MATLAB. Pricing, Distribution, Availability
The Student Edition of MATLAB, which consists of software and a student user's manual, is priced at the cost of a college textbook and is available in university and college bookstores. Information on classroom kits, site licensing and on-site training is available from the MathWorks.
