THE LOEWEN GROUP INC. INITIATES EMPLOYEE SHARE OWNERSHIP PROGRAM

BURNABY, British Columbia, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- In appreciation for outstanding employee contribution, Ray Loewen, chairman and chief executive officer of The Loewen Group Inc., announced today a plan that will more actively involve employees in the company's vision for leadership and excellence in funeral service.
Through a program titled "Sharing the Vision" Loewen employees, both full-time and eligible part-time, will be presented with five common shares each of the company's stock. Certificates, representing employees' shares within a common pool, are expected to be distributed by late September or early October.
"`Sharing the Vision' provides our employees with much more than an ownership in their company's equity," Loewen says. "The program gives our people -- the professional caregivers of funeral service and those who support them -- an opportunity to share in our vision for leadership and professionalism in funeral service."
The company employs more than 4,000 people at its nearly 600 locations throughout North America. This program makes local employee ownership a permanent reality.
"The Loewen Group is the only funeral service company, to our knowledge, in which all employees are shareholders of their company," Loewen said. "The Loewen Group is also one of the few companies of its size in North America in which all employees are shareholders."
The program supplements several of The Loewen Group's other employee programs, including its ongoing stock option and employee share purchase plans.
After the initial issue of shares to current employees, new employees become eligible to participate in the ongoing program after completing three months of employment.
The Loewen Group Inc. is the fastest growing funeral service corporation in North America. The number of locations belonging to the company grew more than twice as fast as the combined growth of all publicly traded funeral service companies over the past three years.
