THE KROGER COMPANY TO DELIVER A PLUM OF A DONATION
 TO GLEANERS COMMUNITY FOOD BANK
LIVONIA, Mich., July 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) will donate more than 45,000 pounds of fresh plums -- a full truckload -- to Gleaners Community Food Bank on Friday, July 10. Gleaners will then distribute the plums to thousands of needy families throughout metropolitan Detroit. The announcement was made by Joel Greenisen, president of The Kroger Co. Michigan Marketing Area.
Greenisen said the top-quality, USDA-inspected fruit became available due to an oversupply of plums from West Coast growers. Kroger and its freight carriers are splitting the cost of transportation and delivery from California, he said.
"It is an unusual situation when this much produce becomes available for donation," said Greenisen. "But due to the generosity of plum growers and Kroger's Wesco produce-buying organization, we have a wonderful opportunity to provide fresh fruit for thousands of needy families in metropolitan Detroit. It's great to team up with another winning organization like Gleaners Community Food Bank to do something positive for our community."
Gene Gonya, president of Gleaners Community Food Bank, commented: "We are especially pleased to receive such a sizable donation of fresh produce, which we do not usually see in such large quantity. Kroger's generosity will help us in our goal of feeding the less fortunate in our community."
Gleaners Community Food Bank, headquartered in Detroit, distributes food to 188 agencies throughout the Detroit area. These agencies serve more than 160,000 weekly meals to people in need.
The Kroger Co., the nation's largest supermarket chain, has been part of the Michigan grocery store scene since 1917. The company operates 77 stores in Michigan and more than 1,200 nationwide.
