THE KROGER CO. ELECTS KATHERINE D. ORTEGA TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS
 CINCINNATI, April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) announced today that Katherine D. Ortega, former treasurer of the United States, has been elected to the board of directors.
 Ortega will serve a term that expires in 1993, when she will stand for election to a full, three-year term.
 Appointed by former President Reagan, Ortega was the nation's 38th Treasurer from September, 1983 through June, 1989. As treasurer, she had both management and policy responsibilities for three of the Department of the Treasury's major bureaus: the U.S. Mint; the Bureau of Engraving and Printing; and the U.S. Savings Bond Division. For her service to the Department of the Treasury, she was presented with the Alexander Hamilton Award, the Department's highest honor.
 Prior to her appointment as treasurer, Ortega served as a commissioner of the Copyright Royalty Tribunal and as a member of the President's Advisory Committee on Small and Minority Business.
 Before entering government service, Ortega practiced with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. in Los Angeles, served as vice president of the Pan American National Bank of Los Angeles, and as president and director of the Santa Ana State Bank.
 Ortega graduated with honors from Eastern New Mexico University with a bachelor's degree in business and economics. She holds three honorary doctor of law degrees and one honorary doctor of social sciences degree.
 She currently serves on the board of directors of Diamond Shamrock, Inc., Catalyst, and Southwest Voter Research Institute, and she is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the National Park System Advisory Board, and Executive Women in Government. From 1990-91, she served as an alternative Representative to the United Nations General Assembly.
 Ortega is married to Lloyd J. Derrickson, an attorney. They reside in Washington, D.C.
