 THE GREENBRIER ACKNOWLEDGES GOVERNMENT FACILITY
 WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va., May 29 /PRNewswire/ -- In 1955, the

C&O Railway Company, now CSX Corporation (NYSE: CSX), was approached by the federal government with an extraordinary proposition, the company said today.
The government was looking for sites upon which to build emergency shelters for use in the event of a national crisis. Factors such as geology, proximity to Washington, and good transportation led them to The Greenbrier, in White Sulphur Springs.
The resort was originally purchased in 1910 by the C&O Railway and has had a long-standing close relationship with the federal government dating from Civil War times. The hotel and grounds were used as a military hospital during World War II.
In the mid 1950s, the C&O assented to the construction of a spartan underground structure which could accommodate the legislative branch.
The secret of the existence of the shelter under The Greenbrier and of the relationship between CSX Corporation and the federal government spanning more than 35 years has regrettably been compromised. CSX Corporation said it and The Greenbrier are proud to have been a part of the nation's effort to preserve constitutional government in times of great danger to the nation.
