THE GLAXO FOUNDATION GIVES $25,000 TO RECORDING FOR THE BLIND
PRINCETON, N.J., March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The Glaxo Foundation has given Princeton, N.J.-based Recording for the Blind a $25,000 grant to help provide tape-recorded math and science textbooks to blind and other print-disabled people in North Carolina.
The Glaxo Foundation is solely supported by Glaxo Inc., one of the nation's leading research-based pharmaceutical companies. Headquartered in Research Triangle Park, N.C., Glaxo Inc. is the U.S. subsidiary of London-based Glaxo Holdings p.l.c.
The foundation funds educational projects, particularly those involving mathematics, science and health.
"This generous grant will help us continue to provide North Carolina's print-disabled residents access to the vital educational information they need to compete academically and professionally with their non-disabled peers," said RFB President Ritchie L. Geisel.
Recording for the Blind is a national non-profit organization that provides taped educational books free-on-loan, books on diskette, library services, and other educational and professional materials to individuals who cannot read standard print because of a visual, physical, or perceptual disability. Last year, the non-profit organization sent nearly 2,500 recorded books to 440 print-disabled North Carolina residents.
"Education is critical in today's world," said Elliott Sogol, Glaxo Foundation administrator. "Anytime we can remove barriers to learning, we should. That's why the foundation was delighted to offer this grant to Recording for the Blind."
More than 4,800 Recording for the Blind volunteers working in 31 recording studios around the country are involved in producing accessible materials for 27,000 blind and other print-disabled people in the United States and throughout the world. RFB's 79,000-volume master tape library is the largest educational resource of its kind.
