THE GAS COMPANY ANNOUNCES CONTRACT EXTENSION; PACT WAS TO EXPIRE TONIGHT

LOS ANGELES, April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern California Gas Co. today announced that it had reached an agreement to extend contract talks an additional 60 days with its union. The current contract was due to expire tonight at midnight.
As a result of this development, all stipulations in the current contract will continue through June 30, including a no-strike clause. This means that the previously announced one-day strike called by the union for Thursday, May 6, has been canceled.
The Gas Co. and the union exchanged opening proposals on Dec. 31, 1992, for a new wage and working conditions agreement effective April 1, 1993. The company and the union agreed in February to extend the existing contract by 30 days, and that expiration date was tonight, April 30.
The "union" is actually a joint steering committee composed of local chapters of two organizations: Utility Workers Union of America (AFL-CIO) and the International Chemical Workers Union. About 6,400 out of approximately 9,200 gas company employees hold represented positions.
Talks are scheduled to resume on Monday, May 3.
