THE FIRST SELF-HELP TAPES FOR BABIES AND CHILDREN THROUGH AGE 9; BUILDS SELF ESTEEM, LULLING THEM TO SLEEP AS WELL

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif., Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Soft words of reassurance and love synched with soothing tones build self esteem in infants and kids through age nine, say advocates of The Happy Dreams tapes.
That's in addition to getting the kid to sleep, of course, says one of the tapes' creators, Mark Davis. The six tapes ($12.95 each, call 800-TO-DREAM), have been credited with influencing tots to the good ever since their introduction five years ago.
"I helped create Happy Dreams because research is telling us children are suffering from low self esteem" says Dr. Cynthia Johnson, professor of education at Long Beach, Calif., State University. She says they help kids, her grandchildren among them, feel loved.
First results were from parents who wrote of newborn babies sleeping better, but now, Bob Davies, another Happy Dreams co-founder, says, "Many children have listened to Happy Dreams every night for five years. They literally wear 'em out."
"Welcome to the world," says the soothing voice on one. "You are so loved." It goes on like that.
Grown-ups might tire of this kind of thing throughout an entire audio tape, but Dr. Brent Logan, a developmental psychologist in Seattle, says, "Newborn babies record every word they hear," adding that they will remember them for life if they are repeated enough.
The Happy Dreams tapes may very well help build a lifetime of self esteem, Dr. Logan says. They can help build inner strength, Professor Johnson says.
"Even eight- and nine-year-old children become calm and peaceful and then fall asleep," says parent Jean Contorelli.
And older kids actually report having happy dreams after dozing off to The Happy Dreams tapes, Davis says.
The Happy Dreams tapes, series of six, $12.95 each plus postage and handling, $59.70 for all six, are available by calling 800-TO-DREAM or writing Happy Dreams, P.O. Box 859, Laguna Beach, CA 92652.
