THE DRESS BARN, INC. REPORTS 18 PERCENT EARNINGS INCREASE FOR ITS FISCAL YEAR ENDED JULY 31, 1993

 STAMFORD, Conn., Sept. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The Dress Barn, Inc. (NASDAQ: DBRN) reported sales and earnings today for the fourth quarter and fiscal year ended July 31, 1993.
 Total sales for the 14-week quarter ended July 31, 1993, were $120.8 million, an increase of 19 percent over sales of $101.1 million for the 13-week period in 1992. On a 13-week basis, the company's same store sales were flat vs. last year. Net income for the fourth quarter increased 16 percent to $6.7 million or 30 cents per share vs. $5.8 million or 26 cents per share during the prior year's comparable period.
 For the fiscal year, total sales increased 16 percent to $419.6 million from $363.1 million during the same period last year. Same store sales increased 2 percent during this same period. Net income increased 18 percent to $19 million or 86 cents per share compared to $16.2 million or 74 cents per share for the same fiscal period last year.
 In commenting on the quarterly and year end results, a company spokesperson said, "In this period of uncertain consumer confidence, we have tried hard to offer exceptional fashion value to our customer, and she, more than ever, has responded to this. To do this, we have focused on being a low-cost producer and are controlling expenses in every area of the company."
 The company continues to maintain its aggressive store expansion program by opening 104 stores during the fiscal year with another 100 planned for the coming year. At July 31, 1993, the company operated 641 stores, a net addition of 77 stores or a 14 percent increase from the 564 in operation last year.
 The Dress Barn, Inc. operates a chain of women's off-price apparel stores, offering in -season, moderate- to better-quality fashion apparel, primarily with nationally recognized brand names, at substantial discounts from department store prices.
