THE DRESS BARN, INC. ANNOUNCES RECORD NUMBER OF STORE OPENINGS

STAMFORD, Conn., March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The Dress Barn, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: DBRN), announced today the opening of 12 new stores on Saturday, March 20, 1993, a record-breaking number for the company on a single day. These new stores are the new, larger size prototype and are the first of 58 scheduled Spring openings. An additional 60 planned for the Fall of the year will bring the total number of stores to over 700. In addition, the concentration of these stores are planned for the South and Central states, outside the Northeast, the original home territory of the company.
Commenting on the company's current quarter performance, a company spokesperson said, "Our third quarter sales performance has been adversely impacted by the unfavorable weather conditions in most regions of the country, particularly in the Northeast where we have the major concentration of stores. As a result, our third quarter earnings are now estimated to be flat with last year, when the company earned $0.22 per share. However, we are optimistic that with more seasonal weather our fourth quarter performance will continue the momentum shown in our first half, ended Jan. 23, 1993, when our comp sales were up 7 percent and net income increased 57 percent to $8.9 million or $0.40 per share compared with $5.7 million or $0.26 per share for the prior year's comparable period."
The Dress Barn, Inc., operates a chain of women's off-price apparel stores, offering in-season, moderate to better quality fashion apparel, primarily with nationally recognized brand names, at substantial discounts from department store prices.
