UNLESS you've been in a club wilderness for the last few years, you'll have no doubt heard and thrown a few shapes to the music of Laidback Luke. One of the most prolific producers and remixers of the past decade, he frequently collaborates with the likes of Sanchez, Angello, Ingrosso and Axwell, churning out global dancefloor smashes with such regularity you'd be forgiven for thinking there might be three of him! Ahead of his
appearance this month at Creamfields Andy
Everett chats to him about his music...
Q You had a lot of chart success earlier in the year with your version of Show Me Love, how did that come about?
A It started out with Steve Angello and me making the track Be - it became a big record and at one point Hardwell mashed Mobin Master's version of Show Me Love on top of it. This was a dancefloor destroyer for about two years. People started copying the mashup and having success with fake versions. So, Steve and I decided to make the mashup an official one and did it with the help of the real Robin S.
Q It was quite brave to take on such a classic, you must have been happy with the reaction it got?
A Yes, for me the original Show Me Love is the reason why I fell in love with the vocal side of house music in the first place. To have my name attached to it now is an honour!
Q You've produced so many massive records over the last few years, how do you manage to find such a high level of consistency?
A I Air produce really fast. I can finish a track or remix in one afternoon. I'm always producing when I'm DJing and travelling, so a lot made in hotel on airplanes. I'm I prefer above watching TV.
Q What's the process you go through when making a track?
A I find myself doing a lot of the pre-production in my head nowadays. I will say, I want it to sound like a crossbreed of that and that track, or with the same kind of vibe and then work out the synth sounds and drum structure. I seem to have a photographic memory when it comes to tracks and when it's time to hit the studio I just bash all my ideas out there.
Q Where do you take your musical influences from?
A From everywhere! I did have my pop/rock period, my hip hop period and even my techno period. I'm a walking clipboard of musical influences. I mash it up with my DJ experience and what works on my floor.
Q What other producers on the scene are exciting you right now?
A I really like the Bloody Beetroots. They seem so diverse and musically gifted. There are a lot of people I look up to, everyone's on fire at the moment.
Q What do you think it is about the Netherlands that has resulted in so many top class DJs and producers coming from there?
A I think it's a few things. Because the scene is so big, there is a lot of competition between DJs and producers. We're all battling for a spot, and it makes us work really hard. The crowd is very hard to work out there, we've seen and heard it all. So, Dutch DJs will work harder to get a Dutch crowd going I think.
Q What are you working on at the moment?
A I am working on an artist album, and I'm waiting for the singers to come back to me with vocals. In the meantime, I'm doing remixes again and just did MSTRKRFT feat John Legend, Junior Sanchez feat Good Charlotte, Martin Solveig andTiesto.
Q Any plans to visit Scotland this year?
A It would be great to come back to Scotland. I'm not sure anytime soon, but I would definitely love to.
